Chamonix Activity Report: 30th May 2011

Imprint
By Kieran Sharp, Updated

So a few rainy days this week cooled the air down a lot from the previous week, but now we begin a period of sunny crazy hot conditions again! It's lovely in the valley, not too many people around but still plenty to do if you like the outdoors and fresh mountain air.

Although just as things were beginning to hot up again, it looks like we might have a bit more bad weather to get through first. The last few days have been scorchers but it started raining yesterday late afternoon and is still going strong now.

However, never forget that just because it's raining, doesn't mean you can't go out for a stroll or a bike ride under the cover of the trees and have at least some measure of amusement. Temperatures are still fairly warm though and the skies are set to clear again towards the end of the week, click here for the latest weather forecasts.

There is always at least one lift open in this pleasure-filled valley and right now we have the Aiguille Du Midi and the Montenvers train open to take you up and explore the glacier, check out some of the views or even for a bit of high altitude mountaineering, skiing or snowboarding.

There is also the Mont Blanc Express train which is free with a Carte d'Hote card. This card is available if you are staying in a hotel, campsite or any other form of accommodation in the valley and it grants you access to the bus and train system so you can explore all ends of the valley without a massive amount of time or money spent getting there.

We are looking at another couple of weeks before the full lift system reopens, making access to downhill mountain biking and high mountain climbing much easier; that will be when the summer really kicks in and the town will be much more occupied than it is at the moment. However it never feels like the town is empty here in Chamonix, unlike other resorts, so you can pretty much come out here any time of year and find restaurants, bars, clubs, cafes, lifts and shops still open for business.

It's not just climbing, biking and walking that's possible - there is a whole range of activities on offer and you won't be short on choice whether you arrive in season, out of season, come rain or shine! The golf course is set at an amazing location in the valley with panoramic views and some of the most spectacular scenery any golf course can boast. There is a hotel and a very high quality restaurant set right on the course; a visit to the tranquil village of Les Praz is sure to ooze away your stress!

Also on offer is another amazing panoramic location for a game of tennis, just a 5 minute walk from the centre of town and with an equally desirable restaurant to enjoy a glass of Pimms after an energetic game of tennis.

Why not check out some of the deals on offer at this tranquil time of year and enjoy some of the many activities on offer set in the wonderful mountains of Chamonix, where no matter what time of year, you will be sure to enjoy even the briefest of visits.
