At lunchtime you’ll find that most restaurants offer a well-priced plat du jour or dish of the day. It usually includes locally sourced meat with potatoes and either a salad or seasonal vegetables.
If you’re travelling with children you’ll be pleased to know that most restaurants in Chamonix have children’s menus. Expect classics such as omelette, chicken, burgers with chips or pasta like spaghetti bolognese. If there isn’t a set menu for little ones, many places are happy to prepare smaller portions from the main menu. For something more regional try fondue or raclette, which are fun to share. Children love dipping bread into melted cheese or grilling meat on a hot stone.
Stroll down Avenue Aiguille du Midi and you’ll come across a line of friendly, informal restaurants serving omelettes, crêpes, salads, pasta and local specialities.
If you prefer a modern, cosmopolitan vibe with funky décor and international flavours you’ll also find plenty of places to choose from. Remember that many of these restaurants offer excellent value at lunchtime when the menu is often much cheaper than in the evening. So if you’re not heading up into the mountains, make time to pop into town and see what the plat du jour is.
