By Alison Shayler, Updated

Anyone planning on driving through the Mont Blanc tunnel this evening should plan to do so before 10pm, when it will close until 6am Tuesday morning.

The disruption is a scheduled closure that will take place to carry out important maintenance work and safety checks.

People planning on driving through the tunnel tomorrow (Tuesday) morning should prepare for potential heavy traffic due to tonight's closure.

There is an alternative route through to Italy, via the Frejus tunnel, should you want to travel in the Turin/Milan direction.

If you are planning a trip you can visit the Tunnel du Mont Blanc website for current news and updates.
