Japanese Climber falls 8 metres in the Gouter Couloir

A 64 year old Japanese mountaineer suffered a large fall in the Couloir du Gouter yesterday afternoon and has been taken to hospital in Annecy as a result of his injuries.

The exact details of the accident are unclear at this stage, but the man is believed to be in a serious condition.

Despite many warnings from local security services about the large amounts of rock fall on that route, unstable conditions this summer and the fact that the Gouter refuge is, once again, closed, it appears that some climbers are still willing to risk making the ascent via this route.

We wish the climber in question a speedy recovery, and strongly advise anyone wanting to know about current mountaineering conditions to speak to the OHM (Office de Haute Montagne) which can be found next to the tourist office to the right of the church.
