Strike latest in Chamonix Valley

Following the general strike called for today, Thursday, certain public and private sector areas have been affected around Chamonix:

* The lift areas were shut first thing this morning, but have been gradually re-opening since 10:00 this morning.

* The trains are basically non-existant today. Two trains between Vallorcine and Le Fayet ran this morning and there is due to be just one return train from Le Fayet to Vallorcine leaving the station at Le Fayet at 18:32. Buses, however are unaffected by the strike and are running normally throughout the valley.

* Workers at La Poste are reportedly on strike, so you may or may not get your post today - no bills though eh?

* The schools are worst hit with Les Houches completely shut, the maternelles in Chamonix and Les Bossons are both closed for the day and in Primaire, the Balmat, Argentiere and Cham centre schools are only partially open.

* With the Mairie saying they haven't organised replacements, it's up to parents to make arrangements for their children. We have also heard that cover at the garderies cant be assured either for today.

It'll all get back to normal tomorrow, Friday.
