**UPDATE** The man was in fact a Polish guide, whose qualifications were not recognised by the International Federation of Mountain Guides Association (UIAGM) and therefore was not allowed to practise under the guise of a 'guide' in France.

Furthermore the victim's colleague was also a qualified guide from Poland, with the right to guide only in certain regions of Poland. The 43 year old man will be summoned to court to respond to usurpation of his guide title, subject to one year imprisonment and a fine of up to 15,000 €uros.

The clients in the group were made up of one other Pole and two Australians.

A Polish climber suffered a fatal accident yesterday (Sunday) afternoon in the Couloir du Goûter whilst descending the Mont Blanc. The man was with a group of five other people when he fell from a height of 3000 metres.

The Couloir du Goûter is a popular route for ascending Mont Blanc, although despite being much frequented it is also notorious for rock falls and avalanches.

Anyone attempting this route without prior experience should engage the services of a UIAGM recognised qualified high mountain guide.
