New sculpture exhibition at Gaillands
If you go down to lac des gaillands today, you might wonder why there is a group of forlorn looking people paddling around in the lake with their umbrellas up when it's such a beautiful day. No, it's not a group of Japanese tourists cooling off whilst protecting their skin from the rays of the sun; it's the latest initiative from the “twinning” committee of Chamonix which organises various events each year with Chamonix' officially twinned towns – Garmisch-Partenkirchen (GER), Courmayeur (ITA), Aspen (USA), Davos (SUI), Cilaos (REU) and Fujiyoshida (JAP).
Opened yesterday evening, the exhibition at Gaillands is the work of Swiss artist – Andreas Hofer from Davos. Entitled “Sad”, he has carved 14 forlorn looking figures out of wood, each holding an umbrella. At first glance, they all look the same but on closer inspection; each one is distinct from the next and they have been placed in a small group at the far end of the lake, with some of them partially submerged in the water itself.
The piece is very fitting with the natural surroundings of the lake and will be on display for the whole of the summer.
