Edouard Baud, a 24 year old local extreme skiing enthusiast, was skiing the Gervasutti couloir below the Mont Blanc de Tacul when a slab of ice and snow gave way mid-morning.

The couloir, situated between 3465m and the summit ridge at 4200m, is reputed to be steep and tricky having been first climbed by Italian Giusto Gervasutti in 1934. Baud had previously skiied the couloir on 31st May 2003.

A fellow skiier avoided the slide.
