Fire At The Refuge du Gouter

Technical problem causes minor damage

featured in News & reviews Author Sophie Nicholson, Chamonix Editor Updated

As temperatures soared yesterday afternoon in the Chamonix valley, a minor fire broke out up at 3,835m in the new Refuge du Gouter.

A technical problem caused the blaze and while no-one was hurt and any damage was minor, it will definitely be a cause of concern for the FFCAM (French Federation of Alpine and Mountain Clubs) ahead of the grand opening of the hut at the end of the month. A technical visit is scheduled for today - Monday - but as yet there appears to be no delay to the opening of the hut to the public in 10 days time.

The new Refuge du Gouter is to be one of the first sustainable and eco-friendly mountain huts and pictures have recently been released of its modern design and pioneering features.
