Climbers survive 200m crevasse fall

Two Belgian climbers are counting their blessings today after surviving a 200m fall into a glacial crevasse on the Mont Blanc range.

Pierre Moreau, 58, and Yannick Dufour, 40, were climbing the Brenva face on the east side of Mont Blanc when they both plunged into the crevasse at dawn on Sunday morning (5th September). The accident was witnessed by a Swiss climber on the Kuffner arête, who called rescue services.

Mountain rescue guides were lowered into the crevasse and the two Belgians were strapped up and winched out before being helicoptered to hospital in Aosta. They have been treated for broken bones and scrapes but, amazingly, will live to see another day!
