Changes to public transport in Les Houches
As in previous years, bus and train travel for those with a Carte d'Hote, a valid lift pass, Carte Resident Secondaire or Carte Gens de Pay is free between Servoz and Vallorcine. This winter sees a bus to/from Les Houches around every 30mins, but the internal 'navettes' have been stopped.
These navettes ran a circuit between Prarion, Bellevue, the Les Houches train station and the village centre as far as Taconnaz which was great for shuttling skiers, holidaymakers and residents alike. Sadly, the cancellation of the internal navettes is a direct consequence of the ski area debate, as it is the lift companies who part-fund the navettes.
However, the main bus service between Chamonix and Les Houches is running to a half hourly timetable with the last ski bus from Prarion to Chamonix at 18:45 and from Chamonix to Les Houches at 19:10. After that, the Chamo'Nuit bus services takes over.
There is NO free travel on the nightbuses, but at a flat fare of 2 euros for a round trip, it's good value. Night buses from Les Houches to Chamonix leave Prarion at 20:00 and 22:00, with buses leaving from Place Mont Blanc in Chamonix to go back to Les Houches at 21:30 and 23:20.
Don't forget you can also catch the train and we recommend doing this at least once as the views on these new and efficient trains with special panoramic windows are spectacular. And you can regale your friends back home about how the trains ran to time despite being about 50cm of fresh snow on the tracks. We caught the train last week during all the heavy snowfalls and had to smile at the number of Brit passengers commenting: 'Can you imagine the trains running to time with this much snow in the UK?'!
