Cables being changed on the Aiguille du Midi cable-car

Imprint
By Ellie Mahoney, Updated

The Aiguille du Midi cable-car will be closed until the 18th December as a result of maintenance work to replace the support cables (as opposed to the motor cable) on the first leg of the route. One cable (on the Mont Blanc side) dated from the 1980s, the other is more than 50 years old.

The operation, which started last week is expected to take 6 weeks, involves using the old cables to pull the new ones into place for a total distance of 2600m and of more than 42 tonnes of steel per cable!
