Demand made by officials for further environmental research into problem

Hopes of resolving the issue of air pollution in Chamonix took a step forward yesterday when community officials made a request for an epidemiological study into air pollution levels in the valley. The application was made to the Regional Health Agency and the aim of the study is to officially evaluate and measure current air pollution levels in the area.

Tourism and heavy goods vehicles travelling through the Mont Blanc tunnel are considered to be major contributing factors to the poor air quality in Chamonix Mont Blanc. Groups such as the Association for the Respect of the Site of Mont Blanc (ARSMB) have raised awareness of the problem over recent years and the local council have put in place a Plan for the Protection of the Atmosphere (PPA). An official study would be a considerable step forward to beginning to reduce and resolve the problem of pollution in one of the world's most beautiful natural environments.
