All change at the Chamonix Post Office!

featured in News & Reviews Author Caroline Face, Updated

Since vandals (or boisterous revellers if you're feeling generous!) set fire to the post boxes integrated into the Post Office building in the centre of town on the night of the 14th July (Bastille Day!), the letter boxes have been condemned.

Last week, the Mairie decided to give planning permisson for the Poste to change the location of the post boxes, over safety fears that the whole building could easily go up in flames if there was another similar incident. So, if you're wanting to send a postcard with those magnificent Mont Blanc views back to your folks in the rainy old UK, you'll now have to use the new yellow boxes!

One box is situated at the foot of the stairs by the line of phone boxes and the other is on the edge of the pavement opposite the Casino to create a rather nifty 'drive by' post box! Indeed, there was such a post box in the past, which was removed much to our disappointment, as there was something quite cool about being able to post a letter in the snowy winter without even getting your feet wet - of course, this doesn't apply if you're in a right hand drive car!

The Mairie has also given permission for the Poste to order special brown postboxes which will replace the bright yellow ones installed this week, with the aim to blend in a little better with the environment.
