A little taste of home on Rue des Moulins
After the fire in 2005 that devastated a number of bars on Rue des Moulins, things have been pretty quiet in this historical part of the town. Recently though, life is beginning to re-emerge on the street as renovation work on the burnt out buildings is well underway and some new shops and businesses have begun to pop up.
One such business is Camp de Base, a British produce shop that opened its doors last month. Selling tasty treats such as cheddar cheese, stilton, Boddingtons, bacon, sausages, crisps, pies, chocolate and that hangover essential, Irn Bru (mmmmm), you can almost feel like you're browsing the isles of Sainsburys (or at least a small corner of it!). With Christmas just around the corner, a trip here is a must to get your crackers, cranberry sauce, mince pies and stuffing for a Christmas dinner to make your Mum proud.
Whilst a number of the Chamonix supermarkets now stock a small array of British products, Camp de Base definitely has the biggest selection in town. However, if your favourite item isn't there, then be sure to ask at the till because Gilles, the owner, is very keen for suggestions and ideas to expand his current stock. Local chalet companies that would like to provide a little taste of home for their guests should also get in touch.
Open from 10am–1pm & 3pm-7.30pm, the shop also has a couple of computer terminals where you can check your e-mails whilst muching through a pack of Walkers. €1 will get you 10 minutes on t'internet. With so many Brits living and visiting Cham, Camp de Base is sure to be a popular addition to the shopping scene and will also put an end to countless friends smuggling sweaty sausages through customs in their suitcases!
