High risk in Chamonix's high mountains

High temperatures mean more unstable conditions on Alpine routes

The Compagnie des Guides in St Gervais has issued a warning this week about the deterioration of conditions on the high mountain, warning mountaineers and climbers about the increased risks.

The normal route up Mont Blanc via the Gouter Couloir is particularly dangerous at the moment due to lots of rock fall, and the prefect of the Haute Savoie region and the mayor of St Gervais have asked that anyone attempting this route take extreme caution.

Their advice is to set off as early as possible in the morning and ascend to the Gouter Refuge as quickly as possible to avoid staying in the danger zone of the couloir too long.

The high mountain gendarmes at the Tete Rousse refuge as well as the staff at the Office de Haute Montagne are there to advise you on current conditions, and safety in the mountains. You are strongly advised to make use of their services.

You can find up to date information no mountain conditions on the Chamoniarde/OHM facebook page
