
Lightning strikes three Mont Blanc mountaineers
Shocking conditions on the Mont Blanc as thunderstorm crosses over
The eratic thunderstorm that crossed over Chamonix this weekend was not without injury as three mountaineers were struck by lighting whilst climbing the Mont Blanc on Sunday morning.
At approximately 10:00 at group of two mountaineers who were roped togther were struck by lightning on the Gouter route towards the Mont Blanc - both climbers in shock and injured managed to get back to the Gouter refuge before being evacuated by the Chamonix mountain rescue services (PGHM).
Then just half an hour later another mountaineer was struck by lightning, injured by the lightning bolt he was taken by helicopter to a local hospital to receive treatment.
The weather alert has dropped from an orange alert (dangerous conditions) over the weekend to a yellow alert (vigilance required) and the weather in Chamonix is set to improve from Tuesday.
