Kandahar broadcast to 225 million viewers
Viewing figures for the Kandahar 2011 have just been released, revealing that 83 hours worth of images of Les Houches and Chamonix were broadcast on television channels worldwide during the event.
225 million people across the world watched the race coverage on TV during the weekend of the 29th and 30th January and there were 9 million viewers in France alone.
The Kandahar is a stage of the Alpine Skiing World Cup; it takes place every year (weather permitting) on the Piste Verte in Les Houches. Despite the name, the piste is actually graded black and measures 3343m with an 870m difference in elevation. It gets its name (“verte” meaning green in French) from the green tint that it reflects when the sun shines on it.
Around 40 000 spectators turn out for the obligatory cheering and cowbell ringing that makes this one of the most exciting annual events of the winter season. Spectators can get right up close to the action, either bagging a spot at the finish line, or hiking up the side of the piste to watch the competitors whoosh past in a blur of fancy Lycra.
