Following growing rumours in the valley we can confirm the sad news that local mountaineer Fredrik Ericcson has been killed in a tragic accident whilst climbing K2 in Pakistan.

Fredrik was attempting to summit the legendary peak with friend and fellow Chamonix resident Trey Cook, amongst others. Their expedition was being blogged via Fredrik's website, where the last posting from 4th August reports good weather conditions and plenty of positive team spirit.

There are conflicting reports on exactly when and how the accident happened but Fredrik is believed to have fallen around 1000m, from near the summit of K2. Trey Cook is fortunately unharmed and is currently in camp 2 at 6400m.

We are expecting to receive more details shortly, which will hopefully shed some light on the circumstances of Fredrik's death.

Fredrik Ericsson was an experienced and skilled mountaineer whose K2 mission was part of an ambition to ski all three of the world's highest peaks: Mount Everest, Kanchenjunga and K2. A popular and well-respected character in Chamonix, news of his death has been received with much shock and sadness.
