A German snowboarder trapped for six hours on a chairlift in Austria was rescued after he burnt money to attract attention.

22 year old Dominik Podolsky was trapped 10 metres above the ground in Hochzillertal, Austria on Saturday when the lift was closed at the end of the day.

Afraid that the fall would result in injury and that he would freeze to death and without a mobile phone Mr Podolsky made the decision to remain on the lift and tried to stay warm using techniques he had learnt in the Army.

After six hours on the lift the cold became too much and he began to lose sensation in his limbs and started falling asleep. He then began burning the contents of his wallet with a cigarette lighter to try and attract attention.

Mr Podolsky burnt €120 before a cleaning crew spotted his flaming twenty and began the rescue.

Mr Podolsky was taken to hospital where he was treated for hypothermia but was discharged that night.
