This weekend saw Chamonix play host to the fourth Freeride World Qualifer of the season. The invite-only competition took place at the Brevent resort, on the steep and cliff-filled Hotel Face, and attracted more than 200 competitor applications for the 80 available places.

Conditions were good, with soft snow and bright sunshine, and competitors were judged on style and speed as they tore down the Hotel Face. Spectators, riders, locals and tourists gathered together at a collection of tents near the bottom of the Cornu chair to watch the competition take place.

"Our strategy is to bring people from all over the world to our valley to discover the beauty and quality of life here, said Chamonix Mayor Eric Fournier. "Today, this is accomplished through events such as the Freeride de Chamonix Mont-Blanc, which is a new means of expression through off-piste skiing"

Included in the 80 places were four wildcards awarded to the winners of Saturday's Helly Hansen Winter Ride which took place in the Floria area of La Flégère. Local Evolution 2 instructor Fanny Gras won the Winter Ride and was then placed second in the WFT Qualifier, beating off stiff competition. Local Chamonix riders were also placed in the four disciplines. Good going!
