Fatal Fall for Chamonix Climber
Romanian Solo Climber Falls at Popular Gaillands Climbing Spot
A Romanian man suffered a fatal fall yesterday whilst climbing on the Gaillands climbing wall in Chamonix without a rope or climbing partner.
The man was climbing solo on the Gaillands climbing wall and had reached a height of 30 metres, not roped up and wearing trainers the man was not equipped to be at such a height, when he slipped and fell.
Emergency services were called to the scene but could do nothing to save the man - aged 30 the man from Romania was residing in Sallanches.
Gaillands is a very popular sports climbing spot, just a short walk from Chamonix centre, and has a range of lines suitable for beginners and experienced climbers.
In 2008 a British teenager fell to his death in the same spot.
