Adventure Film Festival & Photography Workshop

featured in News & Reviews Author Alison Shayler, Chamonix Reporter Updated

This summer, from the 16th - 24th August, heart-stopping stories of adventure and inspiration from around the world come to Chamonix Mont-Blanc, Europe's heartland of epic mountain feats.

From big wave surfing in bitter Scottish oceans to skateboarding in Kabul, Chamonix's 3rd annual Adventure Film Festival will showcase exceptional films borne out of the quest for adventure, inspiration and authenticity in the great outdoors. Over three evenings, visitors can check out the best of over 200 submissions selected by an international jury, and browse art and photography from local and far-flung locations.

Sponsored by Patagonia, the Adventure Film Festival will take place at the Majestic Congress, supported by the town of Chamonix and partners Hotel Aiglons and Hotel Gustavia. This year's movies pack a powerful punch of adrenalin and emotion; from the poetic beauty of Astray Films' surf film by Mickey Smith, The Dark Side of the Lens, through to The Collective's award winning mountain bike film Life Cycles. As ever, the fragility of nature is also a central theme, this year highlighted in Century Films' The Climate of Change.

From story-telling to epic images, the festival will feature a range of work by local mountain artists by the likes of photographer Jonathan Griffith and contemporary French artist Damien Ambrosetti. The art project is headed by gifted painter, sculptor and mountaineer, Andy Parkin.

Chamonet.com will be releasing regular trailers and reviews of featured films, so keep an eye on our homepage for updates.

Alongside the schedule of movies and exhibitions, there is an exciting new element to this year's Adventure Film Festival, the Adventure Photography Workshop, in partnership with Corey Rich and Scott Willson. What better place to learn how to shoot landscape and action than in the heart of the mountains in Chamonix, France?

With a team of extremely talented professional adventure photographers, a safety team of highly trained UIAGM mountain guides and live models, students will have the opportunity to learn techniques and tricks of the trade. Chamonix, the mecca of trail running, mountain biking, hiking, rock climbing, mountaineering, paragliding, base jumping, skiing and more, will offer a diverse set of subjects for students to work with and learn from. In addition to outdoor sessions, ample time will be spent in the classroom in the Hotel Aiglons, learning the post production computer work necessary to become a successful adventure photographer. Don't miss this unique opportunity!

Over the course of three days (16th-18th August) between the classroom and the field, the course will cover a wide spectrum of topics. From creativity and artistic perspective, editing and filing systems, to the business side of sales and marketing. Students will have access to the wealth of knowledge accumulated through years of experience, adventures, and misadventures of our top photographers.

Group size is limited to 15 students so sign up now! Corey Rich and Scott Willson will lead the teaching sessions. Mountain guides will be present and rigging provided for any mountain & rope endeavours.

With the help of assistants, each student will get ample time to discuss ideas with the photographers and advisors. Please be prepared to spend long hours in the field with a variety of weather conditions.

Corey Rich is one of the world's most recognized adventure and outdoor lifestyle visual storytellers. He has captured stunning still photos and video on a wide array of assignments, from rock climbing in India to snowboarding in Papua New Guinea. His editorial work includes assignments for National Geographic Adventure, Outside, Sports Illustrated and The New York Times Magazine.

Scott Willson brings a narrative eye to his visual media - a perspective that looks far beyond the first impression of an image. After an eight-year sojourn with the Patagonia Photo Department, he moved on to The North Face where he has been Photography/Video and New Media director since 2004.
