1. Le Café Comptoir Restaurant

Café Comptoir is open winter and summer, this place serves delicious food in a beautiful mountain-side setting.

Perfect for a lunch stop whilst our skiing or hiking or for a well-deserved beer in the sunshine at the end of a long day in the mountains. With a modern chalet-style interior you can enjoy lunch or dinner here cosied up in the warmth or pass a pleasurable few hours soaking up the sunshine on their delightful terrace.

The menu is composed of dishes typical of the region, with locally produced meats and cheeses featuring throughout and fish from Lac Leman. The house speciality is "La Mystère", a piping hot dish of melted reblochon cheese delicately flavoured with morelles and black chanterelle mushrooms. Everything is lovingly prepared in their open kitchen and elegantly presented.

Booking is highly recommended (by phone only) to avoid disappointment as this restaurant is a popular choice with both locals and tourists alike. They also host periodic art exhibitions or have live music playing for a spot of après ski or an enjoyable evening out.

Open daily from 09:00 to 23:00 and until 18:00 on Sunday. Closed on Sunday evening.

2. La Ferme des Trois Ours Restaurant

Nestled just over the Col des Montets in the beautiful surroundings of Vallorcine, this wonderful restaurant serving traditional dishes from the region.

Specialities include tartiflette, fondue, pierrade, croutes, snails, as well as meat and pasta. Their good value hiker's menu is great to regain your strength after a tour of the area.

Enjoy the menu in their cosy wooden dining room with an open fireplace in winter, or on their sunny terrace with spectacular views of the valley in the summer.

Open daily from 12:00 for lunch and from 19:00 for dinner during winter (mid-December to the beginning of May) and summer (end of May to the end of September).

At lunchtime you’ll find that most restaurants offer a well-priced plat du jour or dish of the day. It usually includes locally sourced meat with potatoes and either a salad or seasonal vegetables.

If you’re travelling with children you’ll be pleased to know that most restaurants in Chamonix have children’s menus. Expect classics such as omelette, chicken, burgers with chips or pasta like spaghetti bolognese. If there isn’t a set menu for little ones, many places are happy to prepare smaller portions from the main menu. For something more regional try fondue or raclette, which are fun to share. Children love dipping bread into melted cheese or grilling meat on a hot stone.

Stroll down Avenue Aiguille du Midi and you’ll come across a line of friendly, informal restaurants serving omelettes, crêpes, salads, pasta and local specialities.

If you prefer a modern, cosmopolitan vibe with funky décor and international flavours you’ll also find plenty of places to choose from. Remember that many of these restaurants offer excellent value at lunchtime when the menu is often much cheaper than in the evening. So if you’re not heading up into the mountains, make time to pop into town and see what the plat du jour is.
