The front of a store called peak performance

3. Peak Performance Store

Location
Chamonix

Ever since Peak Performance began in 1986, we have made it our business to combine sport and style in a unique fusion. Today we are one of Scandinavia's leading brands in sport fashion and we are aiming to make Peak Performance a brand with a world-wide profile.

One of the most basic Peak Performance characteristics is the wide range of products we market. If we can't find a glove that passes our standard, we get an expert designer to design one for us, then choose the best possible supplier to manufacture it. This is our guiding philosophy, from what appears to be a simple T-shirt to the most advanced winter jacket on the market. You, the buyer, deserve the best, and we'll make it for you.

General Stores are the name of our own outlets. These shops convey the ultimate Peak Performance feeling. Having our own stores allows us to present Peak exactly how we want to and gives us a valuable opportunity to interact with our customers face-to-face. It also lets us present new products and materials out in the real world. Today there are 22 Peak Performance General Stores world-wide, where the public can find our full range of products. We found it was fitting to be surrounded by the highest peaks in Europe, which is why we have our flagship French store in Chamonix.

Idris skis at the top of Western Europe

7. Idris Skis

Idris Skis is a unique, 1 man business who make skis from frecycled wood right here in the Chamonix Valley.

They've won awards for their eco-friendly skis and have them available for testing in a number of outlets in Chamonix.

Every pair of Idris skis is crafted by hand. We use renewable, recyclable materials wherever we can, and we source everything from nearby to reduce emissions. We don't like synthetic materials so we use locally grown oak rather than plastic for our topsheets and sidewalls, and bamboo for binding reinforcement. We also think that skis should last, so ours are designed with thicker bases and edges for longevity.

When it comes to performance we're just as uncompromising. We've been building skis for years, and we take our time finessing each new design to ensure every pair of Idris skis delivers an exceptional skiing experience, whether you're carving up the piste or laying fresh tracks in powder.

We're currently hand making five different shapes: Lynx, Chamois, Bouquetin, Kamoshika and Renard, and when we need a break from making skis we create furniture from retired skis.

Idris. Better performing skis, better for the environment.

Boardriders Quicksilver, Chamonix

8. Boardriders

Location
Chamonix

Back in the Stone Age when some unknown carved a board, specifically to ride a wave, the foundation for contemporary boardriding was established.

In the late 1960’s Australian surfers Alan Green and John Law chased a dream – to live in Torquay, make a living and go surfing. In 1969 Alan Green produced wetsuits (Rip Curl) on a $2500 loan from his father, the next product was sheepskin boots (UGG Boots), and in 1970 he and John Law formed the company named Quiksilver. First and foremost Quiksilver’s products are created out of need. Whatever success they will enjoy is always secondary to that point. From Alan and John’s first pair of boardshorts down to anything in the line today, this is authentic performance gear. The point is that Quik stuff works so well because the people who design, make and sell it demand that it excel. This is why board meetings may be scheduled on European slopes, a ship off the coast of Java or a lake in Arizona. Quiksilver employees are a vital part of all research and development. They are the end users; everything they do is designed for them. There are no corporate marketing mission statements, trend- marketing surveys or fashion forecasts anywhere near it. Simple logic is, just create the best, most functional items imaginable and then work it.

Quiksilver Boardriders shop offers a diverse line of products including a complete wintersports clothing collection, accessories, eyewear, watches, and summer casuals. A similar offering for boys ages 8-14 years old, 4-7 years old and toddlers. The Winter Sports division has emerged with snowboarding apparel and hard goods designed for high performance enthusiasts. To further expand the division, in 1997, Quiksilver acquired Mervin, a snowboard manufacturing company that makes Gnu and Lib Tech snowboards and Bent Metal bindings. Girl’s lines includes Roxy gear.
